You're right about the the torque in the Arc/Vector. But is the 12 extra ft-lb worth the 600rpm band loss? Like I said, without really seeing a torque curve, it's impossible to tell. You may also note that the 6spd isn't available (yet) in Arc/Vector. Once it arrives, it should make a difference, but we're all speculating until we see the ratios. Has anyone seen them?
The current 9-3 SE has no torque limitation in 2nd-5th gears...only in 1st. Only the Viggen limits in 2nd & up. And it's my understanding that this is to be nice to the tranny, not for torque steer issues that the new 9-3 is said to correct. Regardless, it doesn't really matter because you're reaching tire traction limits before the torque limit.
I think RP is correct to say that in time the engines will be tuned higher and the new 9-3 may indeed be a better performer. Again, performance being defined in the straight line sense. Many are saying the new 9-3 handles better, and I won't refute or support that until I drive it. I'm not trying to bash the new car (haven't even driven it), just honestly answering the question based on the information available.
As for the C900 riding on rails..... please. I love the C900 as much as anybody, but my 9-3 handles far better than my C900. I think where people make the mistake is that they don't notice they're trying to do the same maneuvers in a 9-3 that they did in a C900, only at 50% higher speed. The 9-3 doesn't feel as fast as the C900, so it's much easier to get crazy in a turn.
Cheers,
'Roo
