I don't know if they improved it in later years, but the German-made ZF automatic in the early 9000 is a nightmare! STAY AWAY from the 9000 if you want an automatic. I replaced TWO auto trannies ($$$$) in my '88 9000T, despite the use of synthetic ATF in the second AT, in a futile attempt to make it last. (Well, it did last longer... 125k miles versus 75k...66% longer lifespan)
The 9-5 uses a MUCH better Japanese-made Aisin-Warner(?) automatic transmission.
Otherwise, all the other posts are right on the money. The smaller, faster, and lighter 9000 is actually a roomier car! Not that the 9-5 is small inside at all.. it's quite comfortable. It just seems that the 9000 is a more space-efficient design.
On the other hand, the 9-5 has a MUCH more solid body structure. It was developed in the late nineties, whereas the 9000 uses a body structure first developed in 1985! Car manufacturers learn a LOT over a ten year+ period.
When I jack up my 9-5 on one side, the doors open and close easily, unlike on my 9000T, where the doors would become misaligned with their latches when one side of the car was lifted.
Go for the 9-5...
Jason
