They're quite simple to maintain. Also, if you don't mind going into junkyards for spare parts, or shop on rockauto.com they can be very cheap. I also don't see any problem with daily driving them. Starting my senior year in highschool, I've been driving nothing but for the past 8 years. They do need regular maintenance, but most of the time, if you're perceptive, you'll notice a fair warning that something is going bad. I've never been stranded and 3 out of 4 of them have been neglected cars that I brought around. The heat is excellent as is traction in the snow.
In addition to automatics, I'd avoid the 8 valve normally aspirated engines, which are reliable engines, but just dangerously too slow for modern traffic. All 8 valves have a difficult to maintain fuel injection system, but if it were a turbo (getting very rare), it'd be worth the trouble. $.02
