before you consider anything else, its critical that the Saab you buy be as rust free as possible. you have to check under the car as well as under the rear seat, drivers and passenger footwells, the jack points, the front suspension areas , bottom of the trunk. ideally find one that has lived in a dry climate its whole life. you still may find rust. these cars rust very slowly however it is terminal once perforation occurs.
personally i think the older cars (pre ABS and Airbag) are easier to work on, however as Karl mentioned the manual transmissions have the smaller pinion bearing and thus a shorter lifespan unless driven by a lady going to church (highly unlikely in a manny tranny). you can however swap in a newer tranny into an older car (i just put a 91 tranny into an '88 vert).
if you are extremely bored, single, no children with a cushy job and some disposable cash, then buying a 900, finding garage space and getting tools and spare parts and spending time reading up and working on them might be something you never regret. however they can be time-sucking vampires simply due to their age. they are also heavier and underpowered compared to today's new vehicles and you may find you have to drive them hard simply to keep up with today's traffic flows. that in itself will wear your car out quicker, especially the transmission becuase the synchros are not designed for quick shifting.
dont ever buy one and rely on it as your primary mode of transportation. i'd buy one as a hobby plaything and 2nd or 3rd car.
even if you buy the best Classic Saab 900 you can find on Saabnet Classifieds, its gonna need work. at least the sellers here will tell you what it needs (now, anyway).
if you join our group you will be impressed at the helpfulness of this group. however it is getting smaller and smaller (i've noticed a big difference in only being away for 2 years) as are the number of cars out there.
