...for the majority of my illustrious 12.5-year driving career. I strayed to 9000 Aeros and E34 and E32 BMWs (including an M5...), but driving a 900 always felt like Coming Home.
If you find a rust-free 16-valve turbo with a nice body and do a huge big-bang replacement of everything that is even remotely worn, and then keep on top of regular maintenance (fluid changes (esp. oil and brake!), spark plugs, that sort of thing), then they can provide years of unwavering reliable service.
They can be very "strange" to work on until you get inside the head of the crazy Swedish engineers that designed them. Most wear parts seem to just be getting cheaper.
Bests,

'89 SPG with 220,000km -- mechanically excellent and rust free, but 6/10 body -- daily beater
