Hi all,
I just finished rebuilding/upgrading the engine in my 85 16V. no expenses were really spared inside, every part meticulously cleaned and checked over, out of spec stuff binned. Heres a quick list of whats inside...
Goetze Chromium coated rings fitted to 87T 'AB' size pistons (85 ones put aside)
Clevite 77 tri-metal bearings, fitted to an almost perfect, balanced OEM crankshaft, plastigauged to my workshop manual specs.
all rotating parts balanced by machine shop, managed to get to 0.4g
Block I cleaned to perfection using caustic soda and electrolosis, repainted and honed using standard 3-puck de-glazer...240 grit I think?
2.1 cylinder head, port matched to 2.1 intake; skimmed to almost minimum spec, cleaned until my hands hurt. disassembled hyd-lifters and made them like new inside. the best 16 valves were chosen from a box of valves I have had from dismantling heads, then lapped into the quite nice seats
factory cams for now until I consider it 'broken in' then custom set goes in.
used Elring head set, and felpro gaskets most everywhere.
Turbo is OEM oil-cooled only unit, which ive clocked funny to fit my front mounted intercooler...
so for the first 150-200 miles I drove it fairly normal, and on base boost, rpm kept below maybe 4000rpm lots of low rpm load etc. I noticed that on deceleration it smoked a fair bit, and after taking off from idling lots of smoke as well...
assumed it was a failing turbo (smoke was blue and sometimes thick, almost white-ish). Removed Turbo, disassembled and rebuilt using genuine Garrett parts and a 360 degree thrust washer, and gap-less piston rings. rebalanced at local shop and reinstalled.
smoke is now much less BUT is still quite a lot IMO. If gearing down from 5th to 2nd there is quite a plume, then for a second after taking off as well. if I let it sit and idle you can start to see it as well, then youll rev it up and holy moly!
assumed rings hadnt seated yet, plugged in APC and did 10 WOT pulls from 2000-4000 rpm, then let off and let it cruise down, then back up again. still smokes
what did I do wrong? at this point you'd have to assume the rings are almost done seating no? do Chromium rings take a long time?
how about the valve stem seals? they're new of course, but maybe they've come off or were bad from the beginning? I installed them using I believe an 11mm deep socket, extension and rubber mallet, gently tapped them home, seemed fine...ive rebuilt the head in my 9000 and had absolutely no issues in 30,000 miles.
anyone have a similar experience and care to let me down easily?
