When I first bought the car in June 2008, it had a fresh DI cassette and only 52K miles. The car passed CA smog easily, but didn't run well around town. I found that the stock plug was a BCPR7ES-11, where the 11 tag specifies an initial gap of 1.1 mm. I found that strange for a 4 cyl turbo engine, I used to run Bosch plugs in the low 030s on my Peugeot N9TE turbo engines. It is well documented that turbo boost accelerates the gap widening process over time, which is why many owners pull the plugs and adjust the gap at some midpoint in the plugs life.
NGK has a large manufacturing plant nearby in Irvine, CA and one day I remember calling one of their application engineers to understand why the recommended plug had such a large gap. He told me that the Saab engineers had designed the DI Cassette ionization function to use a plug with a 1.0 mm gap, and the data is used to adjust the fuel trim. I think that is at the core of your mileage issue, the ECU is throwing away your data at 036.
I did a four month study from 035 to 041 and found that I was happiest with .038. I also found, IMHO, that the stock plugs were worthless crap at 8000 miles of California freeway. The Iridium tiooed plugs run much better in my car, and have a life of 15K miles at highway speeds. Ya pays ya money and takes yer choice, NGK is grinning in all cases.
There is a stock BCPR7 NGK plug available with an .032 gap from the factory
(their part number is '6282'). A useful plug for 900 owners who don't have a DI Casette to pacify.
