Over 300,000K miles on 9000's, I always ran NGK plugs 30,000 miles with no performance issues. Usually set a new plug gap a couple thou under 40. In all cases, except for one, the plugs looked good and performed like new at 30k, ie installing new plugs did not change performance. 30K plugs typically looked good enough to re-gap and run some more. Years ago Aero Guy advocated measuring the plug internal resistance, only once was the resistance out of spec (open), for a set of counterfeit plugs. It was not uncommon for non NGK plugs, in cars other than Saabs, to have faulty internal resistance. Typically 9000 plugs looked a bit black around the body edge, but the insulator would be mostly white with some tan on the down wind side. Unleaded gas made life much easier for spark plugs.
