It's not exactly a myth, rather an oversimplification of a problem. When you go to a parts store and either tell the guy behind the counter the make and model of your car, or use the cross reference guide, they invariably try to sell you some Bosch or house-brand platinum plug of the non-resistor variety. Why they do this, I have no idea. If you research the plug yourself, and make sure it's an exact match resistor plug, it will work fine. That's more work than most people are willing to do, and so the default recommendation is to use only the original NGK plugs. Over time, the repetition of this advice has led a lot of people to believe that literally no other plug will work.
The iridium plugs mentioned are made by NGK, so if they say it's a match, you'd kind of hope they know what they're talking about. I used them in a previous Saab with no issues. I never bought them again because they were really expensive (about 5 times the cost of the standard plug at the time), I didn't notice any performance difference (either power or fuel economy), and the standard plugs already lasted a really long time. It was more than 5 years ago, but I think the part number was BCPR7EIX. It definitely ended in X, and the rest of the part number was similar to the stock plug. If you go to NGK's website they probably have a cross reference.
