Skibumm and Bill Homer are two of the voices to listen to when it comes to 9Ks.

I'm figuring that if I decide to do the HG I'll do as you suggest The tinworm part of the equation means that I should do only what makes sense. And with lots of 5-6,000 synth oil changes in the car's past I think (or am hoping) the chain will be OK. It's not making any weird noises, so maybe it'll be OK.

I'll do the gasket and the head bolts, but may let the machine shop deal with the head bolts. I think some of them were done when my daughter had the car out west for 16 months, so maybe I'll get lucky. (haha!)

I'll try to give things a closer look this weekend, but house projects are looming. And the old "happy wife, happy life" thing is gonna play out. Sigh.

On one hand I don't want to spend money on the car--there are other places it needs to go. And whatever I do is only a short term deal because of the rust issues.
But OTOH, this is best and most satisfying car I've even owned, so some emotion is in the mix. Sigh. Again.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the wisdom, advice and support. The car ran fine on a 200 mile run. A bit more oil in the coolant, but no water on the dipstick and not much leakage at the front corner of the head. I'm wondering if just new head bolts will be enough.
