I can appreciate your point about people being unrealistic about the TRUE value of their cars. However, lets assume for a minute that your car is in prestine condition, albeit 7 years old. You leaf through the classifieds and see a similar car selling for $7,000. To 99% of consumers this is the MARKET VALUE. (The value the car can fetch in the market.) In variably the dealer, however, will offer you $4,000. To 99% of consumers this is TRADE IN value.
The disconnect is that various markets exist. The dealer is always thinking of the wholesale market - and this is the market value THEY are talking about. While consumers read the letter and think: retail market.
The fact consumers are unrealistic about the value of their car doesn't change the fact this marketing campaign being employed by Saab is intended to be deceiving and simply a ploy to get you on the showroom floor thinking "new car".
If you still disagree that this is a shameful ploy, then why didn't Saab simply say: "We'll pay you 100% of the wholesale market value"...
