Why would anybody think a dealer wouuld offer them full retail value for a trade? Saying you'll get maximum value for your trade has been a sales gimmick for years. The there are those promotions that say, "We'll give you $x,000 for your present car, running or not." Or the ones promising below-invoice pricing. They are ALL come-ons to get people in. Because once the consumer is on the lot and gets the wants for a car, there are all kinds of ways for the dealer to make the deal appear "too good to pass up."
Maybe I'm missing something (it is Monday morning, after all) and the guy in the article can try to go to court, but IMHO he has no case. He wasn't harmed and he got a fair price for his car elsewhere. The dealer probably SHOULD have an asterisk or something noting that full market value means maximum trade value (and maybe they will next time) but this is someone getting upset about the way car dealers have always done businesss, regardless of make and model.
Am I being too cynical?
