It's unreasonable to expect a customer to look out for a dealer's interest in a deal. Obviously, they're going to try to make money on the deal...but it's not my job as a buyer to worry about how.
They were playing games with language. There's a case to be made on the technicality, but in the court of public opinion, it makes them look like jerks, and deservedly so. Ultimately for a business, that court is the one that counts.
It's also particularly galling for an informed consumer to see a dealer speak about using the trade amount as a mechanism to reapportion incentive money as profit. I know that's common, but those things don't actually make the trade-in worth less, they just make it less profitable for the dealer.
