You said:
Why would anybody think a dealer wouuld offer them full retail value for a trade? Saying you'll get maximum value for your trade has been a sales gimmick for years.
And I agree, except:
The reason somebody would think this is because the dealer has sent him an ambiguously worded letter stating they'll pay him 100% MARKET VALUE on their car because they are D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E for a car EXACTLY like yours.
I also agree with your second statement, except:
This is not how the ad is worded. The wording implies, specifically, that you're about to get a deal of a lifetime. Coming from a dealer...that's your first warning sign. The second is that you MUST come in during their SLOWEST sales days, Tuesday and Wednesday. Boy, ain't that a coincidence! That's your second warning sign that this is just a ploy to create traffic.
We, the customers, are not to blame. The dealers sets the expectations through the ads they run. We're just trying to take you up on your offers. Of course, you'll cater to our tastes and make it look like a deal of a lifetime only to pad some other part of the deal we weren't paying attention to. Shameful.
And of course...the classic line: "What? You think I'm actually MAKING money on this deal?"
