My guess is that the investors see the uniqueness of Saab making it a good basis for some innovative cars as a way top rebuild the brand.
Even though the world car market is far different than it was in Saab's best years of the mid-eighties, I can see a return to the roots of uniqueness and innovation. And the world certainly needs some automotive innovation!
I doubt Saab will ever be a huge seller, nor do I expect it to compete with BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc. But it certainly be a great alternative to the Asian cars, the mid-priced Euro brands, and US domestics. There's no reason a well-managed, low volume car maker offering a decidedly different product can't succeed if they offer something to buyers who don't want another appliance from Japan or what's left of Detroit, and who prefer cars with a European flavor. Build a good product and market it effectively--people will buy.
I can see some smaller turbo motors, especially diesels, in a range of probably 3 car lines, likely with hatchbacks on some models. And I wouldn't discount the possibility of some type of hybrid or electric. There's lot of room for partnering with other companies to make it happen.
We may not like all that comes out with a Griffin on the hood, but Saab is not going to go away.
