The auto industry is in turmoil. Saab may very well be eaten up or gone in 5 years. There are still too many players in the industry, development is expensive, cash flow delicate, and investment time lines long.
However, Saab is at the beginning of something interesting. They at least have the chance to recapture the sole of Saab and to create cars that invoke passion. Better to fail at doing something interesting than succeed at common place mediocrity. This new Saab may well fail to get it done but I believe they know what needs to be done. More than one could ever say for GM. Saab needs the full attention and focus that it just can't get as a small part of a large organization such as GM.
Success or failure will probably come down to having the finances for the transition during which Saab is built back up and to forming key partnerships for new platform development. The vision, passion, and commitment part is undoubtedly there and at least gives Saab a shot.
Saturn? Still can't figure that deal out. You might be right b/c it seems to be have sold as a brand not as a manufacturing concern. That one is just one weird deal of a new "car" company.
