Diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or older car?

I'm in the market for another car. Used cars and even new ones can be a bit thin post-Sandy. I'm juggling cost, fuel efficiency and availability. I'd like something efficient that can be close to as functional as a 9-5 wagon. That doesn't leave many options. Diesels seems a better long-term bet than hybrids where the battery will eventually fail and weaken even before failure. It doesn’t seem like a great idea to have a 15 year old car and suddenly need a third battery. There's a Jetta TDI wagon. Any experiences or thoughts about the diesel VWs? Other than that, there’s a dearth of wagons these days in favor of SUVs and what’s out there seems to get about the MPGs of a Saab. The VW is not as much car as a Saab, probably even a 9-3. I'm not sure I want more eggs in the Saab basket as I don't have a good Saab indy or dealer. Leasing seems more costly and I'd stuck with a car that I might need to get rid of or want to drive into the ground, but have paid the extra cost of the lease. I drove close to the limits of what is reasonable for leasing.
Any other wagons that I should consider? What non-Saabs are folks getting? Many used cars are surprisingly costly when compared to used Saabs. I guess I’m not the only one questioning buying one at the moment. I know the parts are getting easier to come by. It’s more about servicing and hopefully not having additional car headaches. An older car is cheaper if I can find one that’s ok post-Sandy. It can get costly, depending on the age, mileage, and particular car. Car buying can be a nuisance.
