You're all over the map here but with Saab gone and a revolution going on in the car business it's understandable--it used to simply be a matter of what Saab do I want. You're thinking on diesels is about ten years out of date (and is for most people, myself included). Modern diesels are very complicated engines and will certainly have their issues as they age. The days of ultra-simple diesel engines going 300K with very little in the way of repairs is long gone. Hybrids are getting to be a much more viable choice. I'm driving (but don't own) an '07 Escape Hybrid with 170,000 miles and the original batteries. According to the dealers I talked to the batteries last the life of the car and beyond. And if they do ever go bad you can just drive the car on the gas engine. But manufacturers have made great strides making ordinary gas cars much more economical in recent years with direct injection and wide spread use of turbochargers. That combined with cars become so pervasively complicated could spell the end of getting 200K plus out of cars (as many of us have been doing for years), doing work some ourselves, etc. You can still do it, but I can't think of too many new cars I want to try it with. I ultimately concluded that new cars are the way I want to go, I'm going to lease them, churn 'em and burn 'em and get a new one every three years with all the latest stuff. It's not the cheapest way to go but I'm tired of playing "what's wrong now," I no longer have anyone I consider "my mechanic" and I intend to keep it that way. If you want a wagon I'd look at a new cross-over--there's a bunch of really good ones that get great mileage (the new Escape looks great).
