is always hard to do. Especially so these days with respect to cars. There's a lot of nice stuff out there, but not much of it makes me want to sign up for monthly payments. Some leasing deals are attractive but I hate the idea of permanent car payments.
I'm leaning toward having one or more "appliance" cars, decent used rides that are transportation and relatively cheap to keep (Japanese or some domestics come to mind) and then having a fun or interesting car that can be used for some trips and non-chore type driving. And I'd even consider renting a car for trips if my own fleet was long in the tooth.
This appliance could include my wife's 9-5 wagon, especially as it ages, as long as it remains reliable. But I can see her in a used Escape hybrid, a Focus hatch or even a used Prius. Once my 9K is worn out, I could make do with the 9-5 or a used pickup truck for daily use and a Miata or Z3 for fun. (Since I can't spring for a early '80s 911.)
