I was purchased a new (used) car after looking without much urgency for about a month. I had hoped to get a 9-5 to replace the viggen vert, figuring that with the closing of SAAB there would be bargains on the market. After looking at a half dozen I got discouraged. Manual trans was a must, and the ones I found here in SAAB country of northern NJ all seemed to have high mileage and/or signs of neglect to the engine. I almost ended up buying a 1994 Audi S4 in pearl white, before sanity and recall of the repair bills to be previous Audis stopped an impulsive decision. Thursday a BMW 530i black/black showed up at a local small time dealer; I took one look at it Friday and I was smitten. It sits in my garage now.
The TDI I owned in the mid 2000s was a 98 Jetta, great commuter vehicle but a little lacking in the fun department. The diesel made it nose heavy, loud, and smokey and the engine's power band was pretty narrow. But man, it could cruise on the highway. The gearing is very tall, so at highway speeds (75 in my case) it was still doing less than 3000 rpm. I regularly got over 50 mpg when doing mostly highway miles.
