My wife drives our Volt and commutes about 28 miles round trip per day. Advertised range in electric-only mode is 38 miles - but note that this drops off somewhat when it's very cold out, i.e. last winter in Chicago. One anomaly about the Volt vs. the other cars you are asking about is the gasoline "range extender" (i.e. internal combustion engine driven generator), which means that you can go 300+ miles without stopping. In the winter you can configure the HVAC to "comfort mode" which runs the gasoline engine for extra heat (its best byproduct!) as well.
If you care to wait, the Volt II is scheduled to come out next year.
