That's all well and great, but the average cost of fuel has nothing to do with anything unless you are somewhere where you happen to be paying it. I live in a place where gas costs more and electricity costs less.
It's also worth noting the Tesla is faster, has a greater seating capacity, and a better safety rating than the XF. Where I am, you also get the benefits of HOV lanes, and to that end electric vehicles make even more financial sense in traffic situations where a gasoline powered vehicle continues to consume gas, and an electric vehicle uses little to no electricity. There is also the potential for free refueling where you work or shop, and sometimes preferred parking as a result. Historically, gas prices rise much faster than electricity prices, so there is probably future value in a current electric vehicle purchase. There is some pride that comes with driving a green(er) vehicle, and some pride that comes from knowing you are driving something designed and built domestically.
And, besides all of that, we all know nobody needs a $75,000 vehicle. Or a $35,000 vehicle. The Tesla's appeal is as much image, performance, and comfort as it is good sense. Defining Tesla purely by fuel savings is missing a significant part of the point - the point being it's a pretty nice car, and totally competitive with other offerings in its price range, one way or another.
