I just this week did a 600 mile round trip from NH to Philadelphia this week in my '96 9K with 218K on the clock. 75-80 mph all the way, 27+ mpg, including a bunch of stop and go traffic. I do this, or a similar trip, every couple of months. A Tesla would have died somewhere on the NJ Turnpike, but even if it could have gone 300 miles, my hotel parking did not have charging capability, nor did the office I was visiting. The big hatchback Tesla is a lovely car, but is not practical for much beyond semi-local driving.
A Volt or Prius could have done the trip, although at the same 75-80 mph that I drove the mileage wouldn't have been spectacular and I'm not sure I'd like to spend 6 hours each way in a Volt or Prius seat. I have rented a few Priuses and ridden in a Volt for about an hour, and they really aren't all that comfortable.
EVs and hybrids will become practical cars in a couple more generations of battery technology, and when ride/handling/comfort are elevated, but they are not there yet.
