a couple things... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Fri, 10 Jan 2014 06:42:59 In Reply to: Made a list:, Johnson [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 9 Jan 2014 14:03:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've probably said this before, but car seats are cheaper than cars. I can fit 3 across the back of a c900. The key is to not get fat car seats. If you still have someone too small for a booster (narrow boosters are easy), I recommend Sunshine Kids Radian (I think now called something else, but google it). You should be able to fit 3 of those across the back of just about any reasonably normal sized vehicle. The steel frame allows them to be as strong as a marathon without all the bulk. Boosters are easy: britax parkway is a good one that fits 3 across, but there are many options including cheap ones like graco.
The other thing with car seats - you can't just measure hip room. The location of the depression in the seat, and the location of latch points matters. In the 9-5, the 3 seats fit as tight as in the c900 even though the back seat is wider - the depressions in the bench are such that the outside seats are further inboard from the doors (good for safety) with about 7" gap each side vs 3" in the c900 (iirc)... I was amazed by the forester's seat orientation being such that 3 might not fit inside - it's like they designed it to fit 2 fat people back there...
So I think the best bet is to try the cars out and see what you think. Some of the cars in your list are pretty small. Of your list the one I'd probably be most interested in would be the jetta (wagon tdi), but I doubt it would be the appliance you are looking for (though I've heard the tdi's are a little lower maintenance than the non-diesels). Ford Fusion might not be bad. Ford has really upped their game.
I'm also not sure why the arbitrary 20k 2012 limit? Some cars will be low maintenance way past that and some low mileage newer cars are problems. If you are looking at a 2012 Kia Forte, I would cross shop a 2010/2011 Honda Civic. The new civics are pretty much bulletproof reliability-wise and safer than they used to be. Gas mileage is great and not awful to drive. You won't find a much better appliance. Accord would be a better size for you, but more pricey.
