I've had the pleasure of driving a number of these as rentals. From this list I really would look hard at the Fusion. I'm not saying it feels 'Saab like,' but to me it does feel the most grown up and sophisticated of this group. Some of the others feel like really good small or economy cars, but the Fusion feels like a really good 'real' car.
I also like the latest Focus and it might be the sportiest of the group (and has a hatchback!) but the automated manual transmission is a huge let down for me. I like the Cruze too (and it's turbo!). Check it out, I'm just worried it might be a little small. I've heard good things about the Dart but haven't driven one. No idea about the Avenger but I do see the appeal of the engine.
The Jetta, that one is tough. The chassis feels great, and it genuinely does have that European feel which the others cars don't. De-contenting took its toll though and whatever you do, do not get the base engine. It shouldn't have been offered in a car 10 years ago, let alone today, and really brings down the whole car. Honestly, with your space requirement you might want to look at the Passat. I don't think it's that much more once you ignore the base Jetta (which again, you really need to).
