Just FYI, if there are other posts by a Brian that Brian is not me. I've never owned a Saab and this is my first, and possibly only, topic on Saabnet.
It's on lists such as this one that you can generally get the most holistic views regarding a given marque, and an accurate assessment as to the joys, and miseries, of same. Since Saab is now defunct, that's an issue in and of itself, but at least from 2004 onward the alliance with GM makes it more likely that parts will remain available, though it sounds like even some of those are getting "made of unobtainium."
The information you've offered about the need for a Saab specific scanner is new news to me. I would have thought that the vast majority of information would be obtained via OBD-II, not a proprietary scanner. I do know that there are generally some really advanced diagnostics that may have a proprietary scanner (Jag did this, too) but virtually everything I ever had to deal with as far as extracting codes could be done with any decent OBD-II scanner, including ABS and SRS information if the scanner had that capability.
These are the kinds of insights and information I was hoping to get. It helps me to decide whether I even want to consider "wading into the waters of Saab" or not.
