The V6 engine completely fills the engine bay making routine maintenance much harder. The tight fit even affects heat rejection, so much so that the coolant overflow bottles on V6 engined cars tend to fail early due to heat stress.
Some L4 engines built in '07 and '08 were assembled using incorrect valves. Not all of them, but enough so that if you are looking at an '07 or '08 with an L4 you will want to see proof of valve replacement, or have the engine tested before purchase to be certain it is not affected by the issue. Otherwise, the L4 engine is effectively bullet proof!
How close are you to a knowledgeable SAAB Repair Specialist? I have owned SAABs for 20 years and do not have a Tech-II, but I do own copies of the SAAB WIS (Workshop Information System CD - aka Service Manual) and SAAB EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog CD), and a OBD-II Scanner which is capable of reading the fault codes and resetting them. By knowing the fault codes the WIS tells me how to fix the problem and the EPC gives me the part numbers for any parts that I need to purchase associated with these repairs. As donnohess stated there are some things, including some surprisingly simple things, which can only be performed by use of a Tech-II.
Oh yeah, I am only 10 miles from a very good SAAB Specialist Garage for those things I can't repair myself.
Welcome to the fold!
