Brian, You've gotten lots of good info here, but let me add my two cents. The 2.8 V6 is a strong, very nice engine. I've owned my '09 Aero convertible for 2 years now and don't regret it. I've learned a few things about the engine: It generates a lot of heat under the hood, and this can be a problem, as mentioned earlier. I had to have my coolant tank replaced. Not terribly expensive and had it done by a Saab official service center. I've occasionally had issues of rough running after starting after the car sat and the engine compartment got heat-soaked. At least that's what I think happened. I removed the plastic engine cover and I think that helped a lot with the heat issue. I started being more careful to allow cool down idling after highway driving, and I use mid-grade or premium gas only. I haven't had many problems since I instituted these measures. I guess I'm saying that the V6 is a very nice powerful engine that will reward you with driving joy if you take care of it reasonably.
Some folks here buy China-made tech II clones and have success with them, so you are not necessarily limited to working with a Saab specialist. Good luck with your search and let us know what you end up with.
