Another New Englander, here.
The dealer tossed in a set of Nordic Tracs on Saab winter wheels when I bought mine, and they were great in deep snow, not so deep snow and no worse than anything on ice.
One tire suffered road damage in the winter of '06, so Mr. Cheap Procrastinator decided it was ok to run his Yokohama Avids in the winter of '07, especially since there's also an awd Honda in the garage.
Never again! Maybe brand new all weather tires are ok in winter, but even moderately worn ones offer very poor traction. On greasy days, I got very tired listening to the loud screeching noises from the vicinity of the passenger seat. I live at the top of a long hill and, when snow accumulated, the low front ground clearance of the non-snow tire equipped Saab made the climb home quite challenging.
So I'd check out the price range of a set of snows and steel wheels at Tire Rack. My experience sez that a Saab with snows is as good in the white stuff as an awd Honda with non-snows.
Yes, an extra set of tires is kind of a pain to store in the summer, but for New Englanders, this is offset by safety and utilitarian concerns. And I hope you don't get a Winter of '08 like the last one.
