I agree with you that Japanese and Korean auto makers do not have that financial burden to drag along. And it makes a difference.
But I do question GM's management, like their choices of car types. Too many of them, and uneven in terms of quality. Image counts too. For example, if you are not a real car fan, and you go to your local GM dealer, without knowing, you can end up with an american car, a korean car, or a japanese car.. The Pontiac Vibe is a Toyota, the Aveo a Suzuki or Daewoo? (I'm not sure.
Japanese makers have not made this mistake yet. If you buy a Honda.. it is built by Honda, same for Toyota.
Same mistake for Ford and their Mazda based Fusion and Focus. People truly "adopt" a car maker, and they feel cheated when they know their car is only another anonymous rebranded asiatic thing.
