9000 owner thinking about a 9-5 wagon, advice wanted

I've got a '95CSE with 185k miles that apparently has a fatal flaw in the engine. That is the last place I expected problems, as the previous owner and I have done regular oil changes, and it has had strictly syn oil the last 8 yrs. No matter the engine appears dead.
I am seriously looking at 9-5 wagons, and do not have the luxury of following this thread for a number of years. I do have the impression that pre-2005 engines had sludge problems for a variety of reasons. How about the post 2005 cars? Are they fun to drive and well made?
What is the current wisdom about buying a 9-5 wagon? I really like manual trannys, but am finding them rare. Are the manual trannys good?
For those of you who have driven both the 9000 and 9-5, what do you think of the comparison of the two models?
I'm trying to figure out what to do, and I'd like to stay in the Saab family, as I've owned Saabs for 30 yrs. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
