GM had to experiment with light/low-profile pistons for the same reason that Toyota, VW/Audi and Chrysler did similar experiments in their designs that led to oil sludge: trying to meet existing and upcoming government emission and fuel consumption mandates.

10,000-mile oil change interval was obviously a bean counter mistake, but that's the same mistake that companies like BMW, Mercedes and Audi made; heck, some of them even specified 15,000-mile oil change intervals! The alternative industry approach was not providing free maintenance at all, then you have the situation like Toyota, where the car owners take their cars to cheap lube places, where they put in SA oil, which should not be used in any car made after the 1930's. SA oil account for 1/4 of annual engine oil sales in the country . . . I don't know about you, but I'm not seeing 1/4 the cars on the road being made before the 1930's. LOL. So the lack of additives in those SA oil (as opposed to the SL and SM grade engine oils conforming to most up-to-date standards) lead to sludge in tight-tolerance engines.

Hind-sight is 20/20. Blame GM or Toyota for not foreseeing all eventualities is just silly; you may as well blame yourself for buying the car and not seeing the same eventualities. The mfrs provided the full warranty in the contractual agreement, and in the case of GM even extended warranty to double the length in the original product purchase agreement.

BTW, even among the "affected" models, the actual engine death rate is on the order of 0.5% - 5%, and in the lower range of that order of magnitude. That means, if you have a 2% chance of engine dying of sludge in a used car that's worth $5000, whatever solution you come up with, it'd better cost less than $100. That means tearing down the whole engine is not an economically viable solution; whining and trying to turn the clock back obviously is not a solution either.
