Yes you can "see" the fuel pump through the old access hole on an 06 and up 9-5 but I doubt you can replaced it through there as we did on the 05 and older.
I haven't had to do one yet so I can't say for sure but if it is like the 9-3 Sport Sedan with all those rigid EVAP hoses attached to the pump and it looks like it is from the parts catalog. You will never be able to bend them and pull them out of the hole, no way.
Yes, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly but as in the 9-3 Sport Sedan case when those sending units started to fail here and there on cars still under warranty, Saab and GM miraculously came out with a repair kit to replace just the sending unit instead of the whole pump.
If all cars would have been out of warranty it probably wouldn't have been that important.
I think the 9-3 sending unit is also used on other GM cars since it is a good GM number so that might have made a bigger impact as well.
So your car might or might not have had the fuel pump unit replaced and it could be something else, I guess we will never know.
