Google "xenon headlight bulb exploded" and you'll get a ton of results. Also in the video projector business (not exactly the same as an automotive application but the same bulb technology) it's an accepted fact that HID bulbs sometimes announce they've reached end-of-life by exploding.
And many of these same first-hand accounts indicate that the lens and/or reflector were damaged by the explosion. And repairing that damage is not cheap.
Now that's NOT to say that a fake bulb will explode and a genuine one won't. I kind of get the sense that it's a crapshoot - some do and some don't, and that applies to both genuine and fake bulbs. But if the genuine one are made better and last longer, it stands to reason that in any given moment of operation, a genuine one is less likely to explode.
