1) The 9-5 is more than capable of substantial towing - its stopping that becomes an issue, so if the trailer is (well) over 1000 lb., trailer brakes are really important.
2) What you need is a wiring diagram. Although the trailer electrical connector is deleted, the wiring might still be there, in which case what you need is a bunch of "scotchlock" connectors. The wiring on the older cars, the ones with the trailer connector, had brake and turn signal lines that are separate from the ones going to the tail lights, plus 12 volt "switched" (and fused) and 12 volt "always hot" (and also fused).
