I solved this problem two ways, I got an '11 BMW E91 M-sport and a Toyota Sienna. I know the Sienna is heresy (and I never thought I'd have a van), but the '07 Aero wagon 60th was having its problems and the wife was getting a bit upset about it. We also needed something a bit bigger and didn't want an SUV (we had a Mercedes R-class for awhile and hated it) as we've got two kids and a golden retriever. She wanted the Sienna (a '13 XLE AWD) and she drives it to work, I really only drive the thing if we're all going somewhere. It's very nice on the highway, not so great in the twisties.

That's why I have my '11 BMW M-Sport wagon, proper RWD, sport suspension, and 6MT. Love the feel of the car in corners, better than the Saab Aero. Definitely smaller cargo area, but the rear seats have just about the same amount of room as the Saab.

I saw that BMW is going to offer the F31 wagon here with the 2 litre diesel any day now - though only with the 8-speed auto (which I think is a great transmission), that might be an option if you could live with a bit less cargo room. 280 lb./ft. and 50 mpg would be nice...
