Cost of ownership

Is it cheaper to keep old cars going? Yes if you don't mind keeping them up or occasional breakdown. Plus lower taxes and cheaper insurance. Depreciation almost flatlines in later years. But to drive a car equipped like this and fun to drive for under 200.00/mo. is tough to do. Even with a new car, under warranty, you have to pay for wear items like tires, wipers, oil changes and brakes.
As the 9-5 approached 90k, my costs ramped up a bit, I replaced a lot of stuff at 90-123k, much of which I probably wont ever have to replace again, I plan to keep the car another 3 years or 175k, whichever comes first. It still looks like new, inside and out which tells me they had good paint and solid interior materials.
I keep some pretty detailed records for the 2004 9-5 Aero. Based on what I read here, I have experienced the usual failures on this model at the 'normal' times. Bought this car in 2007 for 16.3k as a local CPO with 37k on it. The CPO turned out to be a good deal as it carried though until 2011 and really kept our costs down, we even had a good mech at local dealer which is now gone. I do about 2/3rds of the work myself, a great, local Saab Indie does the rest. Here are my numbers...
2008 - $80, 38-47k, CPO
2009 - $1144, 47-58k, CPO
2010 - $295, 58-69k, CPO
2011 - $625, 69-80k, CPO
2012 - $1765, 80-92k
2013 - $1905, 92-105k
2014 - $2836, 105-118k
2015 - $1855(YTD) 118k-
This covers everything but gas, taxes and insurance. This is a bit more expensive than my 1994 900 SE and 2000 9-3 SE, and about 5 times more than my 19 year old Ford pickup, but parts are much cheaper for that vehicle.
