I don't know. I'm kind of laughing at myself right now.
I just picked up a "new" 04 9-5 with 120K miles for myself to retire my old Volvo 960.
It was a new customer coming in with some problems and wanted me to look it over to see what it would cost.
After giving it my regular checkout I came up to about $4000.00 in repairs and I informed them that they were at a cross road and it would either be to start spending money for quite awhile or take the repair money and put it toward something else.
Also, I told them that this is what I see now, not what might be coming due later on that I could not see at this time.
Also, for a car to need that much work right away means they hadn't hardly spent any money for a long time on repairs which means they are not that deep into the car as is.
Plus, a few repairs that had been done was of low quality like coffee can cat welded in and rear O2 sensor rerigged to after second cat and C/E light bulb removed from instrument to cover up botched cat repair and Propart IDM installed and a 2x4 installed to hold the rear window up.
So anyway, they asked if I was interested in buying it which at first I was not but then thinking about my old trusty Volvo only getting older I thought maybe this would be an ok replacement since it is the cheap version with no sunroof and fog lights and stuff like that so I did.
Well, I shouldn't.
So far I'm up to about $5300.00 customer pay on the tally I keep and I'm not done yet. I hope by God that this car will perform for 10 years with no more than oil changes as my old Volvo did.
So just like I warned them about that it could be more things lingering, it sure was and I got stuck with it.
And then we have my wife's 07 9-3 that has had almost no repairs at all in 120K miles and nothing lingering for the future either.
It's really weird how one car to another can display such a big difference in breakdowns thinking about all cars that has come through the shop.
