I replaced the starter in this car at 164,518 miles back in May of 2016. It's only four years old with 46,000 miles on it. It's a Bosch rebuild from eEuro. I doubt it's the starter.
I place a voltmeter on the car and find that the battery is NOT charging. I bring the car in the garage after it has been out running errands and find the resting voltage is below 12 VDC. As stated, the battery is new. A bad starter would not cause a discharged battery. I recharge the battery with a trickle charger and the car starts right up.
The car was driven today and I didn't charge the battery first. It refused to start when reaching its destination. My wife opened the hood and let the engine cool for about 20 minutes and it started.
The positive battery cable was replaced at 143,933 back in September 2014. I checked the negative battery cable and the resistance in it is about 200 milli-ohms. IMO that's not bad.
I have a new alternator for the car and it goes to my trusted independent mechanic tomorrow for further diagnosis and installation. They'll put a new belt in at the same time. The current one has 67,000 miles on it and was replaced in September of '14 - so it's time.
I'll post back after the car returns from diagnosis and alternator installation on Friday or Saturday.
