Bone dry is the key word here.
If there is no oil slick at all on the side of timing cover, next step would be to remove crank pulley and look at seal and O-ring area.
Have not seen a crank pulley yet that has been so worn out that a new seal could not fix it.
It was some cases back in the old 900 days where the crank pulley bolt was torqued too hard and cracked the snout on crank pulley or it was too loose allowing the crank pulley snout to crack and that created a leak. But from the 94 and up cars, I have not had a problem with the crank pulley surface.
Just had an 07 in today where the leak was obvious after cleaning up the area. A small trickle coming out from behind/below the timing chain tensioner area meaning the head gasket is leaking. This engine also have worn piston rings creating too much pressure in crank case, so fixing the leak means a rebuild of engine.
