oil leak - crankshaft pulley, Speed Sleeve, seal, O-ring Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Wed, 25 Mar 2020 11:05:38 In Reply to: Re: oil leak - crankshaft puller or pan?, mlc [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 24 Mar 2020 07:40:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One of the two '06 9-5's I maintain has a very slight leak at the pulley/harmonic balancer. The symptom sounds a lot like yours, MLC, with no oil above. There's a very thin film of oil on the inside of the balancer I have a new Speed Sleeve ready, along with a new front crank seal and an O-ring for the oil pump cover.
The harmonic balancer on this car already had a Speed Sleeve installed by a previous owner / mechanic, with a slight groove worn in it - I replaced the seal soon after purchase and tried to avoid the groove. This time I will replace the sleeve and do it right, including grease on the seal and balancer to prevent ruining the new seal on startup. Contributors on another board have described installing a new seal, but ruining it by starting with the seal 'dry'.
