Old habits... Posted by PGAero [Email] (#1143) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PGAero) on Thu, 21 May 2020 11:43:24 In Reply to: Spare DIC in the trunk, el. al., AeroEd, Thu, 21 May 2020 08:40:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I guess old habits die hard, huh?
You're absolutely right about failing DICs giving some warning. I've had a spare DIC in the trunk (okay, hatch, really) of my 9000 Aero, Viggen, and 9-5s since ~2008 when my 9000 didn't start one day in the garage. Nowadays, 9-5 DICs are very reasonably priced.
The serpentine belt and CPS (as well as a host of other parts) simply stay in the "Saab Parts" bin in the garage.
I do recall hearing of people who have changed serpentine belts on road trips because (a) theirs failed and (b) they had one in the trunk. I changed a friends' serpentine belt in a quiet parking lot just about a year ago... I had a spare, and theirs failed. (It's far easier in the garage.)
I do have the luxury of having three cars for our two-driver family. If something unexpected happens in one of our cars (the '06 9-5 is the newest), then that car simply waits until I fix it, which sometimes requires the parts be ordered and shipped. That doesn't happen much as I really try to be ahead of the maintenance game with all of them.
