My guess is that the damage is from long oil change intervals using cheap oil and cheap oil filters. The first long oil change interval from new probably set it on a path to destruction with new engine debris sloshing around the bearings until some of it go embedded. Thrashing it (driving it like you stole it) exacerbated the damage. Ignorance, neglect and complacency - the three horseman of crankshaft bearing hell.
