I have a 2001 that had the same thing happen. The main bearings were trashed, and I tried to replace them in situ. I could never get the uppers out, so I decided to just replace the lower halves and be done with it. The crankshaft locked up, just like yours did, so I pulled the engine. It turned out that the crankshaft was slightly bent. The machine shop I took it to thought it was due to overheating, because the journals were slightly shrunken, too. I bought a used crankshaft for $100 and had the shop do a line hone to reopen the journals. It turned so smoothly after that, I couldn't believe it. The balance shafts had also frozen and caused some other damage, so it all turned out to be necessary.
