It’s a good one! In my 2003 9-5 V6, I am hearing a clicking sound from the air box. When I changed my cabin filter, I unplugged both passenger side motors to try to isolate the sound. Of course it is coming from the driver side and not the much easier to get at passenger side. At any rate, while I was fiddling with those motors, I checked both and made sure the gears were set properly.
Back to the noise. No ACC codes evident, the should will be 4 or 5 clicks (plastic on plastic), pause and then repeat, most noticeable when changing temperature to cool (like when the car has been parked in the sun and then started).
It sounds to me like the stop arm starting to go, almost like the end hasn’t broken off, but is cracked, so that the rotation in the center causes the clicks. Dunno — just a guess as I cannot get up in there to take a look given the condition of my back.
I am hoping my Indy can sort it out when I bring the car in for a state inspection in a week or so.
