I have to replace my compressor and possibly other components as mine locked up and took out the clutch too. It was recharged about 8 years ago.
The AC system is not just for summer use. An AC system should be used all year (even in winter) as some of the oil circulates in the coolant gas and lubricates the internal seals, especially the compressor shaft seal. If the seals dry out, they will leak slowly. Also, in winter, the AC removes moisture from incoming air and keeps your window from depositing ice on initial start on the inside until the engine warms up to deal with the condensation.
