John, admire your determination. The test trick w/9 volt battery sounds interesting - do have a voltage tester that need to learn to use.
Here's what can tell you - have door panels off - have reset start volume to 25 and turned fade to rear - with my ears 3 inches or less from speakers hear muffled sounds, both speakers. Speakers do move in-out, replaced surround on the one needlessly, thought it was putting out distorted sound which learned was coming from left dash speaker while playing a bad, probably poorly made homemade tape (my own). Both speakers play muffled - did swap left with right, still same - they both look good, wire connections, movement, no tears or deterioration of surrounds.
That's when figured out something was wrong about feed to speakers - and began checking rear deck, etc.
Think it's the amp - may just go there next. One of guys on this thread sent site info (which saved) that lists color of wires for different speakers and all else - mostly beyond me. Plan to check colors and should figure out the battery or that voltage tester that's gathering dust - and test amp connections.
Sometimes it helps just to talk things over with someone. Mucho Gracias!
Chris
