Wrote a long explanation earlier today but it didn't post properly - either too long or my error.
Yes, drove car for five years without paying much attention. Knew I wasn't getting rear deck sound - chose to let it ride since was listening mainly to talk radio and occasionally a CD or old tapes which sounded well enough on front speakers. Started checking this fall when thought had a bad front door speaker - only to discover that f-door speakers weren't putting much sound at all. Played with start up volume and bringing in rear door sound (good) and checked out rear deck speakers multiple times - never heard a note. Get only muted, very low front door sound.
So think testing f-d speakers at rear door plugs will be next step - though suspect they will give sound there - both speakers look undamaged. If that proves to be the case, will pull glove box and check connections at amp, & head unit if don't find cure at amp. Will post results when get to bottom of problem.
Am thankful to ALL for the help given. Plan to do this over a course of weeks - waiting for warm weather - live in PA.
Drove 9000s before and never had a serious issue - even successfully upgraded a CS to CSE system with amp & pair of Infinity rear speakers from Saab sound specialist in Upstate NY - had done in local shop. Read many of historic posts on HK sys here & other Saab sites before starting this thread. Thanks again.
