I think it depends quite a bit on model year, engine, etc. The older xc90 with the 3.2 or the xc70 with the t6 or 3.2 are pretty reliable. First model years I'd stay away from and they don't shy away from complexity... Eg, supercharger, turbo, and electric motors to get over 300hp out of a 2.0 4 cyl to move a 5-6000lb tank. Overall other brands seem to have similar or worse downsides and Volvos seem to hold up pretty well in our climate. But if I could just buy a new 9-5 wagon and be able to fix it anywhere in rural Canada, I would. Still planning to keep the ones we have as long as possible (and a c900 indefinitely).
