Have you checked the pressure/vacuum in the crankcase with a sensitive gauge? If the crankcase ventilation system is not working properly the crankcase can pressurize pushing oil out more than it might normally leak. The PCV kit isn’t that expensive and needs to be replaced periodically as the check valves can stick and the hoses get mushy. I don’t think the Saab kit is available anymore so you have to go with aftermarket. If you really have to take the engine out, how about a used engine rather than a rebuild. I have to agree that the wagons are hard to match in today’s market, I have three.
